David Suter - Research Project

Vision Guided Mobile Platform

Vision is a primary sense for navigation in humans. However, until recently, vision required too much processing power for inexpensive robots. This project involves the construction of a cart that uses vision for real time obstacle avoidance.

The platform has a 3-camera stereo (tri-nocular) sensor, connected via fast serial (IEEE1394-firewire) to a 1GHz Pentium III based computing system (which processes the images and controls the platform completely autonomously).

As viewed in the following pictures, the platform was constructed by a final year undergraduate student (Leslie Liew).
